Continued Recognition for Innovation and Unique Design

Philadelphia, PA – March 8, 2012. The easy-open capabilities of the revolutionary Orbit® Closure, which is growing in popularity across Europe amongst both consumers and brand owners, have been recognized by the industry with a string of prestigious awards, including five in the UK, two in France, two in Germany and one global award. Developed for use by CROWN Food Europe – Cans and Closures, a business unit of Crown Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: CCK) (Crown) (www.crowncork.com), the closure was designed to offer consumers enhanced openability and convenience for products in glass jars.

The ORBIT® Closure’s unique two-piece system reduces the torque needed to twist the closure and break the seal, making it significantly easier for consumers to open compared to traditional closures. With space on the cap for key messaging, it also offers enhanced visibility on the store shelf without altering brand image. These benefits have been recognized by the industry leading to a number of awards that highlight how the closure is not simply the brand owner’s choice, but also increasingly that of the consumer.

Among the string of accolades won in 2011, the Orbit® Closure was honored with Gold in the Starpack Consumer Products category and Supreme Gold in the MPMA Best in Metal Awards, the first metal cap ever to be nominated for the prestigious prize. Judges at the Starpack Awards noted that the innovative Orbit® Closure was capable of meeting the needs and wishes of the very young and old consumers as well as those with dexterity problems. This success led to a nomination and win at the international WorldStar Packaging Awards.

The Orbit® Closure was also recognized at The Canmaker Can of the Year Awards 2011 with Gold in the Ends, Caps and Closures category, where judges were impressed with the closure’s easy-open capabilities. Following this, three awards were also given at the UK Packaging Awards for Innovation of the Year, Metal Pack of the Year and Consumer Convenience Pack of the Year.

In addition, the closure won first prize in the Sales Packaging category of the German Packaging Award 2011. Overall, 21 products received commendations across the program’s seven categories, with Crown winning the competition’s most coveted prize. The Orbit® Closure also won first prize at the 2011 Silverpack Awards. Now in its third year, this award program recognizes innovations in packaging that meet the needs of Europe’s growing population of older consumers, demonstrating the intuitiveness and openability of the cap’s design.. Two awards were also received from the Oscar de l’Emballage program, one in the Food category and the second a “Promising Start” award.

“The Orbit® Closure has had a highly successful year and its profile continues to grow throughout Europe,” said Ana Neale, Marketing Director, CROWN Food Europe – Cans and Closures. “We are proud that the industry has recognized the value the closure brings to consumers and remain committed to deliver innovations that help our customers build their brands through distinctive, attractive and convenient design.”
