Sustainability Makes the World Go ‘Round
Crown has lived by the three pillars of sustainability – economic, environmental, and social – since its inception in 1892. In celebration of Earth Awareness Month, here are three facts about Crown and metal cans that exemplify that commitment that you might not know:
Did you know that packaging fruits and vegetables in metal cans rather than in formats that require refrigeration or freezing can save over a billion liters of food per year?
While reducing the amount of food waste requires a multipronged approach, packaging is a key part of the solution. Metal, to an extent unmatched by any other packaging format, keeps foods fresh and safe for an extended period of time. Products like fruits and vegetables are picked and packed at the peak of ripeness before they are canned, and their nutrients are locked in for many months, even years.
Did you know that nearly 75 percent of primary aluminum and between 80 and 90 percent of all steel that have ever been produced are still in use today through recycling?
Once steel or aluminum is produced, it stays in this loop forever, no matter how often it is recycled, given its unique properties. And when these metals are reused or repurposed, there is no loss of physical properties.
Did you know that Crown is committed to support the communities in which we operate and the future workforce?
Named after John F. Connelly, who served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Crown for 33 years, the John F. Connelly Scholarship Fund was established in 1992 to mark the company’s centennial anniversary. It provides one-year post-secondary educational scholarships to the children of Crown employees around the world. Over the last 25 years, the program has attracted approximately 18,500 applicants and has awarded over $3.8 million dollars to 1,873 children.
